Enamelling Weekend Course with Linda Connelly
Linda Connelly will be coming to Faversham to do a weekend of enamelling at More Than Metal on 1st & 2nd August, both days start at 10:00 and we aim to finish at 16:30. We are very lucky to have Linda doing a workshop as she is an award winning enameller and it has been hard to arrange the weekend.
This course will introduce you to the application and firing of opaque and transparent vitreous enamels on copper.
On the course Linda will supply enamels, copper blanks, gold lustre and gold leaf.
The following charges will apply:
Copper blanks £2-£5 including enamel.
Fine Gold leaf £5 for 80mm x 80mm square leaf
Face masks £1
Over two days we will cover the following techniques:
Sgraffitto.
Use unleaded liquid enamels on copper to achieve texture and patterns under subsequent layers of leaded enamels. The enamel can be applied with brushes or steel tools in a variety of thicknesses to achieve different effects.
When dry we can use mark making to achieve images, textures and patterns that will show under subsequent layers of colours. The enamelled pieces can be augmented with fine gold leaf and gold lustre in the final firing which can also be sgraffitoed to add extra pattern and definition to the design.
Stencils
Learn to make your own stencils and use these and ready made stencils to create colourful designs with enamels. These pieces can also be augmented with gold leaf and gold lustre in the final firing.
Printing with Enamels
Learn to use printing techniques with enamel using rubber stamps, riso-screens and hand-made decals. These can be used to achieve rich layers of pattern and colour on enamel and again there is the option to augment with gold leaf and lustre in the final firing.
What will I make?
All of these techniques can be used to make separate samples on copper and also combined together to achieve unique and exciting effects.
Note:
Printing and stencilling with enamels is also very effective on silver.
What will I learn?
Preparation of metal surfaces
Preparation of enamel
Sifting and wet laying of opaque and transparent enamels
Use of counter enamel (enamel on the reverse)
Designing for enamel and how to incorporate enamel into other jewellery
projects.
Application of good health and safety practices with enamels in the workshop.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to:
Make a range of samples on copper showing different processes
Make badges, small pictures, pendants and earrings using ready made blanks.
What Level is the class?
The class is suitable for beginners and those with some previous experience.
How will I be taught?
The process will be shown step by step through group demonstrations and you will have 1-1 guidance from the tutor. You will create a series of samples which you will use as inspiration to make one or more pendants and pairs of earrings using ready made blanks. Each technique will have a handout that will be emailed to you before the class along with a suggested list of equipment to bring.
If you would like to join this course please email me and I will send you the booking details.
